Sapanca is the easiest escape from Istanbul: a lake, forest roads and trout restaurants, roughly ninety minutes east of the city.
How long it takes
From Sabiha Gökçen or the Asian side: 75 to 100 minutes. From Sultanahmet or Taksim: 110 to 140 minutes, because you cross the city first. Leaving Istanbul before 09:00 or after 20:00 saves real time.
The road
Almost the whole journey is motorway. It is a comfortable drive, and the last stretch through the hills towards Maşukiye is genuinely pretty. Tolls are included in our price.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip works if you leave early. You get the lake, a trout lunch in Maşukiye and time at a waterfall before heading back. If you want to see Kartepe as well, stay a night. Rushing both in one day means spending most of it in the car.
What people actually do there
- Walk or cycle around Lake Sapanca
- Trout restaurants along the Maşukiye stream
- Kartepe for the view, and for snow in winter
- Tea in a forest garden, which is the real reason most Istanbul families go
Why a private transfer
There is no direct public transport worth the trouble, and a rental car means dealing with Istanbul traffic on both ends. A private vehicle with a driver lets you stop where you want, and the driver waits while you eat.
