The Best Day Trips From Istanbul (And How Long They Really Take)

Bursa, Sapanca, the Princes' Islands and Şile — realistic travel times and who each trip actually suits.

Not every advertised "day trip from Istanbul" is a good idea. Some involve six hours in a vehicle for two hours of sightseeing. Here is our honest ranking.

Bursa & Uludağ — 12 hours

The first Ottoman capital, reached by fast ferry across the Sea of Marmara. Genuinely worth a full day: mosques, a silk caravanserai and a mountain cable car. Best for: history and a change of scene.

Sapanca & Maşukiye — 10 hours

Lake, forest, waterfalls and trout restaurants, about 90 minutes each way. Best for: families, and anyone who needs green space and cool air rather than another museum.

Princes' Islands — 8 hours

A ferry ride and a car-free island of wooden mansions and pine trees. Best for: a slow, cheap, pleasant day. Avoid: summer weekends, when the ferries are packed.

Şile & Ağva — 9 hours

Black Sea beaches and two rivers, about two hours from the city. Best for: summer. Not worth it in winter.

Cappadocia — do not do it as a day trip

You will see "Cappadocia day tour from Istanbul" advertised. It means a 06:00 flight, a rushed circuit and a late-night return. Cappadocia deserves at least one overnight. We will say so even though the day version would be easier for us to sell.

How to choose

If you have three days in Istanbul, spend them in Istanbul. Day trips make sense from day four onwards, or if you have been to the city before.
