Istanbul Airport is 40 km from the old city. Here is what each option actually costs you in money, time and stress.
1. Metro (M11 + tram)
Cost: lowest. Time: 90–110 minutes with changes. Verdict: excellent value if you travel light and arrive in daylight. With two suitcases and a tired child it is a long journey involving stairs and at least one change.
2. HAVAIST airport bus
Cost: low. Time: 60–100 minutes depending on traffic. Verdict: comfortable and reliable, but it drops you at a hub, not your hotel. Budget for a taxi at the end.
3. Taxi from the rank
Cost: metered, variable. Time: 45–75 minutes. Verdict: fine when it works. The risks are language, a driver who does not know your small hotel, and no fixed price before you set off.
4. Private transfer
Cost: fixed, known in advance. Time: 45–75 minutes, door to door. Verdict: worth it for late-night arrivals, families, groups of three or more, and anyone with a lot of luggage. For two people arriving at midday with backpacks, the metro is genuinely fine — we will tell you that if you ask.
Practical notes
- Sultanahmet's streets are narrow; some hotels can only be reached on foot for the last 50 metres.
- Friday afternoons and weekday evenings are the worst traffic windows.
- Always agree the price before departure, whichever option you choose.
